Ah, coffee. The name rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it? If you are a coffee lover like me, you know just how much it makes life easier. All you have to do is drink and BOOM, you are amped up to deal with just about anything. Isn’t it weird that some people don’t care for it all – and worse, mislabel it as something unhealthy?
On International Coffee Day today (October 1), let’s take a look at why you should be unabashedly downing this magical beverage on a daily basis. And the next time someone tells you off for having too much coffee, just like me, you can tell them why it’s good for you. Good enough to drink it every single day for the rest of your life.
1. It gives you a reason to wake up
If you’ve ever suffered from depression or just aren’t a morning person, you know how sometimes getting out of bed is the hardest thing you will do all day. Fortunately, having something to look forward to can often motivate you to rise and get moving. And a fine cup of coffee is a damn good way to kickstart the day, isn’t it?
2. It keeps you going for hours
If you’re a perpetual sleepyhead like me, you have to make coffee your best friend! Coffee contains high amounts of caffeine, a stimulant that affects the central nervous system. That’s the reason a cup or two can keep you awake, alert and energized for hours. Which is particularly handy when you have to work after barely sleeping or worse, staying up all night.
3. It stops you from attacking people
Whether you are easily irritable, short-tempered, or just have to deal with annoying people in general, coffee is what ups your patience and tolerance. Without it, you’d probably be verbally or physically attacking all those who rub you the wrong way.
4. It’s good for your mental and physical health
Did you know that coffee is a mild euphoriant? That’s right, your cup of joe is the most popular mood-altering drug in the world. But don’t worry, this is actually a good thing: when taken in moderation, coffee has several health benefits. According to studies, it reduces depression and lowers the risk of suicide, particularly in women. It also reduces the risk of several kinds of cancers, strokes, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, dementia, etc.
5. It helps you lose weight
If you have a large appetite and have been struggling to lose weight because of frequent hunger pangs, guess who’s got your back? Coffee helps suppress appetite, boosts metabolism, and burns fat. It even relieves muscle pain after a workout session. However, you have to it take black and without sugar to get these benefits. And if you truly love coffee, you know this is a sweet deal. Bitter is better, right?
6. It cleans out your insides
Fact: Coffee makes you want to poop within minutes after you drink it. It works as a mild to moderate laxative for 3 out of 10 people. So gulp it down and say hello to regular bowel movements. Whether you like it hot, cold or decaf, you are not going to be constipated with some coffee by your side.
7. It gives you something to bond over
Have very little in common with someone? Try asking them how they like their coffee. With the rate at which coffee consumption is increasing around the world, chances are high they will be as big a fan as you, or at the very least a casual drinker. Either way, it’s the perfect icebreaker.
8. When chosen carefully, it empowers farmers
A lot of people have to work hard in terrible conditions for minimum wage to produce our beloved coffee beans. But you can put a stop to that right now. Make sure that you only buy coffee that is fair trade certified. Sure, it is more expensive, but you will be glad doing your bit to ensure that millions of farmers around the world are getting their due.
So there you go – these are the reasons you need to make coffee a part of your daily routine.
