One thing that life teaches us all is that change is constant. Why, not just our circumstances, even we change over time. But how do you know if you’re changing for better or for worse? While there are many ways to figure that out, one surefire indicator is wisdom. Here are some key signs that indicate you are growing wiser.
1. You stop apologizing for who you are.
Like every other human being, you know you are not perfect. However, unlike most people, you are no longer ashamed of your flaws and weaknesses. In fact, you own them. Because you know that being imperfect is an integral and unavoidable part of being human.
2. You don’t take yourself too seriously.
While you respect yourself and stand by your values, you are also aware that nothing good comes out of being rigid and self-righteous. You are humble enough to laugh at yourself when things go wrong. Even as you know where to draw the line in personal and professional relationships, you know when to let something go. In other words, you are chill.
3. You invest in personal growth.
You work on your problem areas in life instead of letting them be as they are. Unlike the general population, you fully realize that apathy is going to make any situation worse. As for the things that can’t or don’t need to be changed, you embrace them.
4. You fight for your dreams.
You are aware of the ground reality that nothing worthwhile in life comes easy. Whatever it is you want, you have to struggle, you have to prove you’re worth it. Instead of letting life happen to you, you actively go after what you want. You refuse to sit around, hoping to be plucked from the crowd.
5. You say yes only when you mean it.
Your time and energy are valuable, so you don’t waste it on the things that don’t really matter to you. As hard as it is to say no, you do say it – and often. And when you say yes, it is only because you are a 100% interested in fulfilling that commitment. Saying yes is not an obligation in your book. Go you!
6. You value relationships.
Your family and friends have a special place in your heart, so you show and tell them exactly how much they mean to you. In fact, you know that every healthy relationship needs work and maintenance. And you are more than willing to make an effort to keep it that way.
7. You have zero tolerance for truly toxic people.
You would rather have a few genuine and caring individuals in your life than a laundry list of fake and insincere people. You are simply not interested in being pseudo connected with those who don’t care about you. At the risk of coming off as cold or hard to please, you bravely cut off ties with toxic people. And yes, you are one of the few people who can tell the difference between those who only need love and care, and those who are pure poison.
8. You take responsibility for yourself.
You get that your words and actions are powerful and need to be used carefully. You take personal responsibility for all the life choices you make – irrespective of whether the outcome is good, bad or meh. When you make mistakes, you try to learn from them instead of blaming something or someone.
9. You accept that life doesn’t always go as planned.
You won’t always get what you pursue and sometimes, shit will happen without any reason or warning. Life always comes with surprises and challenges – and you are mentally prepared to at least expect both. Even though you make your bucket lists and follow through on your goals with purpose, you never forget that it can all be disrupted..
10. You no longer think you are immortal.
It took you a while, but you have finally come to terms with the fact that death is certain (and often unexpected) for each and every one of us. Although it is an unnerving realization, it also gives you the courage and freedom to live your life to the fullest. Since you know your time on earth is borrowed, you live each day authentically and enjoy the little things.
