There’s a myth that only certain people are entitled to trauma
Like the soldier who’s back from war
This woman who survived an acid attack
That teen who saw their parents hacked to death
It doesn’t work that way, PTSD chooses its victims
And it’s many things, but certainly no ageist
So children, adults, seniors – everyone is susceptible
It doesn’t always have to be ‘cos of a life-threatening event
Could be the result of anything stressful for the individual
From physical assault to sexual abuse
Still, there’s light at the end of this long, dark tunnel
As intense as it gets, PTSD is curable
The triggers, flashbacks, panic attacks, et al. can be fixed
With counseling, therapy, and good old medicine
Support and self-care are crucial too
Just try to have faith and hope for recovery
Time heals wounds if you work with it
Do your best and you may just find
You’ve finally regained what you long lost:
Control of your life, you brave warrior

I have been diagnosed with PTSD but no one takes it seriously because the reason wasn’t “as bad” as it is for soldiers and prisoners of war. People can be so unempathetic. Thank you for this validating poem.
