Choosing Passion Over Stability: A Conversation with Asif Alarakhia

Career reinvention demands courage, especially after spending decades in one profession. For Asif Alarakhia, that moment came after 26 years in systems analysis, when he chose passion over stability and entered the world of 3D printing.

Today, his creations range from classic and contemporary pop-culture pieces to pretty yet practical household items. In this interview, he reflects on what inspired his career change, what sets his work apart, and more. Over to Asif.

1. Who or what inspired you to start your own 3D printing business?

In 2012, I came across a video featuring a machine that could build a product from imagination by converting digital concepts into physical form. The video showed a child bringing his broken robot toy to his father and asking him to create the missing part. The machine, called a replicator (now known as a 3D printer), recreated the toy perfectly. Seeing the happiness on the child’s face really moved me. I thought that if I had this extraordinary technology, I could do amazing things with it.

When I started, I was making prototypes and basic products. At that time, it was more of a hobby and a passion, and I was not sure how commercially useful it would be. I made items like toys, rings, and bracelets, but the quality was not very good. Raw materials were limited, color options were few, and I was still learning, so print times were long, and I didn’t know many technical tweaks. Today, I have mastered all the necessary settings and can also handle machine maintenance on my own.

2. From pop-culture keychains to toy figurines, you have a wide range of products. What is your Unique Selling Point?

I am currently selling in the Indian market, where many people are still not fully aware of this technology. I try to create interest across all age groups by offering a wide variety of products, from toys and household artifacts to prosthetics and car accessories.

My customers, both new and returning, know that my products are unique and not easily available elsewhere. In a market where many sellers import products or sell at much higher prices, I make sure my pricing remains reasonable. My USP is that my products are affordable without compromising on quality.

After a decade of experience, the quality of my products has improved significantly, and they are comparable to items sold on platforms like Etsy and Amazon. I have even received feedback that my toys are good enough to be sold in stores like Hamleys! Since my products are unique, I also get repeat customers who come back for new designs and customization. One of my customers purchased a custom photo lamp from me for her first marriage anniversary, and she liked it so much that she bought another custom photo lamp for her sister’s birthday.

3. Is there something about 3D printing that you wish more people knew?

There is a common myth that anything and everything can be printed using 3D printing. While this is true to some extent, there are limitations. For example, a printer has a limited bed size, so it can only print objects within that size. However, newer printers have been developed that can print larger items, even up to a full-sized chair.

Another myth is that 3D printing works instantly with just the press of a button. While modern printers, like those from Bambu Lab, allow wireless control and mobile app operation, the process still requires effort. The designer must first create a 3D model and make necessary adjustments on a computer before sending the print command. While the technology has advanced, knowledge and implementation are essential.

4. So what’s new in your store?

I have been working on some Stranger Things merchandise that is either not easily available or very expensive elsewhere. One of my best-selling items is my Funko Pop-style characters, which are very popular with kids right now. I have also created a baby Demogorgon keychain and bag charm, along with a Demogorgon-shaped fidget spinner, and a Stranger Things-themed mobile stand.

I recently delivered an order of personalized 3D figurines of a boy and his cat, which was a special project for me. I am currently working on creating HueForge photos and FIFA 2026 keychains.
