Unpopular opinion: while most people rave about their love for traveling, it can be as much fun as swimming in a frozen lake. Once you jump into the water, the adrenaline rush gets replaced by an intense sensation that feels like the pricking of a thousand needles. Similarly, factors like culture shock and jet lag often overpower the thrill of visiting a foreign land. That said, travel is important for reasons other than shopping or creating an enviable Instagram feed. Let’s take a look at three of them.
First off, travel can do wonders for your confidence.
Take the case of my former colleague Anita, a shy girl who struggled with simple social interactions such as ordering coffee at the local cafe. But after a few international trips, she is now skilled at speaking to strangers. Even when she has to rely on Google Translate to communicate, she no longer feels afraid. And we all know that the software is far from perfect!
Second, traveling is good for mental health because it gives you a break from routine life.
Ever noticed how your mind feels minty fresh after a vacation? This happens because whether you go to Bali or your hometown, you pause the daily grind. Escaping the demands of everyday life and immersing yourself in a new environment allows your brain to relax and reset. The result? A happier, less stressed you.
Third, travel can expand your worldview.
Exploring new places gives you a glimpse into various customs, traditions, and beliefs. This exposure helps you appreciate the richness of other cultures, and with an open mind, you can even integrate aspects into your own life. For example, during a recent work trip to Japan, my best friend was blown away by Omotenashi – the Japanese art of hospitality. Witnessing their outstanding customer service made her rethink her professional interactions, and she has made it a point to be just as responsive to her clients’ needs. She says that Omotenashi is why she can afford to go on another trip soon. She does not have generational wealth, it’s just that her clients are responding to her improved customer service with loads of referrals and testimonials!
As you can see, traveling is a lot more than a fun activity. Much like swimming in a frozen lake, it will challenge and transform you. So, whether local or international, travel as often as you can. Bon voyage!
